Astrophotography by Eddie Guscott

M46 & NGC2438

In the constellation of Puppis lies an unusual open cluster - M46. Unusual because a planetary nebula (NGC2438) lies directly between the cluster and Earth, and is seen superimposed onto the cluster itself.
M46 contains around 500 stars of magnitude 10-13.

Date/Location: 7 March 2008   Corringham, Essex
Equipment: 8" f/5 Newtonian reflector (1982 vintage)
Camera/Exposure: ST2000XM CCD camera + Astrodon filters
RGB image 30/30/30 minutes in 3 minute sub-exposures
Notes: A difficult object for me due to the southerly declination of the object (-150)
It barely skims the rooftops at the bottom of my garden. There are also some collimation
errors that need looking at (odd shape stars - lower left)
