Lunar Eclipse 21 February 2008

This is a composite image. The background starfield was recorded one week prior to the eclipse after calculating the position of the Moon for 03.30 UT 21 February 2008 (mid-eclipse).The eclipsed Moon image was then overlaid onto this by matching any stars visible in the eclipse image.

Background star image is a CCD image of RGB 15/15/15 minutes with an ST2000XM CCD camera and Astrodon filters attached to a 60mm f/6 refractor.
The eclipse image was obtained through the same telescope but using a Canon 300D digital camera.

The weather conditions were awful - just about 100 percent cloud, but as the weather satellite IR image below shows, there were some small gaps which led to very brief hazy (not clear) periods. I am located just to the right of the arrow.

The image below shows the better part of the cloudy conditions.
