M27 - The Dumbbell Nebula

M27 is a planetary nebula situated in the constellation of Vulpecula. Approximately 1200 light years distant, this nebula was formed about 20,000 years ago.

Equipment: 5" TMB f/6 Refractor on AP900 mount
Camera/Exposure: ST2000XM with Astrodon filters Ha-OIII-LRGB 360/240 mins. (10 hours) all 20 min subs, all binned 1x1
The narrowband exposures were blended with the above LRGB exposure to create a deep image of this nebula
The outer shell seen in this image was processed in a separate manner to the inner core of the nebula and therefore does not reflect the true brightness ratio. In reality, the outer shell appears much fainter (see image below processed by Al Kelly)

The version above was kindly processed by Al Kelly (http://www.ghg.net/akelly/) using the same data as the HaO3LRGB image above. Al's processing was all full frame processing (eg. no selective sub frame processing) and thus presents a truer brightness ratio between different areas of the hydrogen shell.
