| M42 - The Great Orion Nebula |
|
Easily visible to the naked eye as a faint smudge in the sword of Orion , the Great Orion Nebula is actually within our own Milky Way galaxy, at a distance of about 1500 light years. It is a cloud of gas and dust which may be the home to new planets being "born" around newly formed stars. |

| Notes: | My first really successful prime focus picture on film. Conditions were cold (-1 celsius) and damp/frosty with a slight breeze. I was pleased to see how the background nebulosity came out (but not sure if I've got the right colour). Also, I am not sure what caused the abberation/artifcat around the bright star lower left of centre. |
