M42 - The Great Orion Nebula

Easily visible to the naked eye as a faint smudge in the sword of Orion , the Great Orion Nebula is actually within our own Milky Way galaxy, at a distance of about 1500 light years. It is a cloud of gas and dust which may be the home to new planets being "born" around newly formed stars.

Date/Location: Dengie Marshes, Essex   24th January, 2004
Equipment: TMB 5" F6 Refractor on AP900 mount guided with an ST4
Camera/Exposure: Olympus OM1 35mm camera / Provia P400F slide film / 1x50 mins, 1 x 5 mins
Processing: Scanned with Minolta D'Image Scan Duall II @ 2700dpi, Aligned with Registar, post processed   with Photoshop 7
Notes: My first really successful prime focus picture on film. Conditions were cold (-1 celsius) and damp/frosty with a slight breeze. I was pleased to see how the background nebulosity came out (but not sure if I've got the right colour). Also, I am not sure what caused the abberation/artifcat around the bright star lower left of centre.
